Noxzema

It was pretty clear from Day One that Dr. George Bunting was going to have to find a better name for his product. Even by the standards of 1914, when Bunting introduced his new cosmetic cream, the name he had chosen, “Doctor Bunting’s Sunburn Remedy,” was not going to perch easily on the nation’s lips.

Fortunately, his first customers loved Dr. Bunting’s greaseless cream with its aroma of camphor, menthol, and eucalyptus instead of the greasy, tallow-based concoctions then on the market. And one customer even solved the name problem with his fan mail. Doctor Bunting’s Sunburn Remedy, he declared, had “knocked ” the eczema that had been torturing him. Knocked eczema? Noxzema was born.
